Grace Khawam is a public health professional and a disability activist. She is currently a PhD researcher in Disability and Development at Oxford Brookes University, UK. Her aspiration is to challenge the common misconceptions around intellectual disability in Lebanon and to push for a shift in discourse which would focus on the agency and contribution of youth with intellectual disability to society. Being the mother of a child with a disability makes her a natural advocate for inclusion. Grace is also a university instructor at Saint Joseph University in Beirut, where she teaches two graduate courses in the Master’s in Public Health Program at the Higher Institute of Public Health. Grace has a Doctorate in Pharmacy and a Master’s degree in Public Health from the American University of Beirut. She also has a certificate in Global Mental Health from Harvard University, with a focus on refugee trauma. Grace has worked for more than 12 years in the development and humanitarian fields in Lebanon, essentially within a monitoring & evaluation capacity at local and international non-governmental organizations.
